Need Help Installing Modem

Before i start please note that i'm a total Newbie at this so please try not to laugh to much at my questions.

I bought a modem on the weekend and have put it in my machine. It's a store brand modem built with an Intel Chipset. It came with a drivers CD which i was surprise had linux drivers on it.

Now here is where i'm confused I'm running Mankdrake 9.1 Final, and i'm not sure what i have to do now to install the modem. The file which has the drivers is a .tgz file and i don't know what to do with it.

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I'm no Linux guru (well, I used Red Hat Linux back in 1998 but back then it wouldn't support my VGA card so I couldn't run X - I only used it to test my web developing projects; but now most distributions I've seen support the latest 3D cards that I've got which makes it easier and fun to run X)... but I had no troubles using an external K56Flex modem as well as V90 modem but external only... and I don't recall Mandrake 9.0 (or Mandrake Multi Network Firewall 8.2) to specifically ask for a third party driver...

When I installed Mandrake last time I didn't even have the modem attached to the serial port when it was "probing serial ports" then after installation, I just plugged the modem into the COM1 port and configured my dialup ISP connection (Username, password, phone, domain etc) and I attempted the dial with the Network Monitor (net_monitor) and clicked "connect" and away it went dialling and establishing dial up Internet connection...

Maybe it was a fluke that both my modems were already supported... Anyway, hope this helps.
