Question Need help installing a Wireless Notebook card.

Hey all, i just installed Fedora core 4 on my laptop last night to try something new for a change. My desktop is running XP home :-\. I need some help installing a Wireless G linksys wireless notebook card for communications with my wireless router My desktop and xbox 360 are currently hooked up to the router as well if this might play any roll in hindering connecting. I try to run the install CD that the notebook card originally came with but Fedora Core 4 will not run it, so I guess i either need some kind of mod so it recognizes the file type or something? Or do i need to know the raw information for setting up a wireless network. I'm a computer geek in training, so feed me your knowledge and assistance plz!

Search the HCL section here to see if card is listed and see what it takes to get it to work.

HCL says i need something called Ndiswrapper to install the XP drivers. I have obtained this program but the install text file proves exceedingly difficult to follow...How do i check my kernel? If anyone is familiar with Ndiswrapper, please share what you know.

First check out this guys site on yum setup and the repos. http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...ion_notes.html

Now there three ways to do it I know of. With the correct repos setup you should be able to use this command as root in a terminal.
Open a terminal as a user. Run the command ' su - '. Enter root's password.
Now run the command ' yum install kmod-ndiswrapper '.
If that works fine then follow the ndiswrapper to setup the nic. Not a user of ndiswrapper so do know the procedure. There are many post on this question here. Use the Search tool and use fedora ndiswrapper.

Next way is goto http://www.atrpms.net/ and download the ndiswrapper for your distro version and kernel version. You must get the one that matches your current running kernel version. To see your kernel version use the command ' uname -r '. Now the name of the file you need will contain those numbers. Newer version number or lower version number will not work. Ndiswrapper is a module compiled to match the kernel. Once compiled it will only work on that version. Run the command to install. Must be done as root. ' rpm -Uvh ndiswrapper*.rpm '. Again find post on fedora ndiswrapper setup.

Now the last way is compile it yourself.
This is a bit more setup.
Fedora Core does not install the kernel source when you install Fedora. If you are using the default installed kernel meaning you have not upgraded then on one of the install cds is a file called kernel-devel-******.rpm. The ***** is the number version of kernel and must match. To install ' rpm -ivh kernel-devel*.rpm '. If you have updated the kernel you need to go where you got the update and download and install that kernel-devel-******.rpm.

To list your kernel rpms run this command ' rpm -qa | grep kernel '. If no kernel-devel-******* exist then the kernel source is not installed based on the rpm database.

Next extract the ndiswrapper from the archive file and follow the install. I do not know it but guessing it goes like this.
./configure [ this may not be needed ]
make
make install [ must be run as root]

Again follow the docs and post here on Fedora setup.

Now if you upgrade the kernel you will need to go through the whole build or install process as above.

Last important thing. If using wep or wpa disable that on the modem till you have can make the connection. Then you can start reenable any security you have. This way you will not be going in circles over wep or wpa and not even know it never could connect based on network config file.
