Smile Need Help Badly Please

I have a dell optiplex gx110,yeah i know old,i just bought a nvidia geforce mx 4000 128 mb pci card and installed it,works well with windows, but i want to use linux with it.

I tried to install suse, and everything was ok until i got at the end where it says detecting hardware, then the screen went blank with a small white dot in the upper left hand corner,i waited for a while and no screen,so i rebooted and put windows back on.

So can anyone tell me how to get this card to work,or which linux distro supports it?

Thanks In Advance
Donald Smouse

Greetings.
You have this pretty detailed howto available for your distro (you forget your distro's version). Return to ask more if needed.

EDIT: I forgot the link (!): http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-...ler-HOWTO.html

It is pretty harmless.

The fault is due to a mismatch of the video driver by the installer.

Later distros are a lot better in this respect.

Try another distro is the easiest way.

It can be repaired but you need to know how to edit the Xwindows configuration file, norally held in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but your post does not tell us how far you are into the installation.

In general by press ctrl+alt+backsapce can drop you into a terminal mode. You only lose a mean of communication with the installer. Don't blame the hardware or yourself.

I installed the whole distro, but when it boots it only boots into the terminal asking for user and password,i enter this information and it stays in terminal.

I have tried to use X -configure and startx and nothing except for
when X -configure says that i have a nvidia quadro pro mx 400 and it's a geforce mx 4000 pci.

How do i configure X to use this video card?

Thanks

I recommend you to install the nvidia module (or driver if you want) and use nvidia-xconfig instead. I think the link I posted above will be helpful because relates nvidia module with the Suse version you have installed. If you don't want to download from nvidia site using the terminal, start by replacing the line 'Driver "Nvidia"' in the /etc/xorg.conf file, by 'Driver "vesa"', startx, download the applicable file from nvidia.com, get out of X, run the file and follow instructions. If any problem arise, please come back and post detailed info about the OS version and the files involved, thanks.

One of my PC has a nvidia Geforce Fx 5200. Drivers like "nv", "nvidia" and "vesa" have been used depending on the distros and the version of the xorg.

Linux uses generic drivers and I never had a need to get a video driver for any of the Linux I installed.

I normally just alter the driver statement with "nv" if "vesa" doesn't produce the ideal effect, by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf directly. The scanning frequencies also need to match the monitor characteristic.

If Xwindows doesn't work you should be able to find out the reason from /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The Above link is helpful, but how can i download and install it from ther terminal?
If i could do that,i think that would be perfect,I have dsl connection so it shouldn't take long to download it.

Thank You

Using links browser, and maybe your links compilation-installation let you use the links browser like this: links -g (framebuffer mode).

EDIT: Or "links http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html" to select your architecture; besides the nvidia installer, you need your in-use kernel sources installed. But the better option I think is gaining X access the way specified by me and saikee in the posts above.

Same Problem

He doesn't say if he resolved the problem or not - or how. But I have the same problem, same POS GX110.

Installing Ubuntu 6.06 - The onboard video is being recognized even after installation of the new card (GeForce FX 5500). I have the restricted modules and the nvidia-glx module installed. Hacked up the xorg.conf but no joy.

I'll post the error message, output of lspci, and the mods I made to xorg.conf once I get home. If someone could get me pointed in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.
