cant get modem to work under mandrake, fedora, Linspire or Debian

really want to try using Linux online

hi, i'm having the same problems except i'm running Debian, so i'm not sure how to run the .rpm file. I'm horribly flustered at what to do. Perhaps someone could walk me through this the beginning because i've been trying to get my modem up for 2 weeks now with no avail. Thanks in advance for any help!
