need a printer recommendation

I haven't had a printer in some time, and after getting a new job, I'm interested in finding one. Can anyone recommend me an inexpensive black-and-white laser printer with a reliable Linux driver? I had an HP Laserjet P1006, and I liked it when it worked; but it was prone to refusing to work, not receiving a signal from the computer unless I reinstalled the driver.

HP and Brother seem to have about the best Linux driver support. I've always looked at a printer then went to the manufacterer's site and see if they had a specific driver for that model. Or you can go here http://www.openprinting.org/printers. I would stay away from Dell.

Define inexpensive... I assume this is for home use? For decent B&W LASER printer I suggest the Brother HL-2270DW.

Dell does not make printers; it resells third-party printers under its own brand. The last I heard, they were reselling Lexmarks, but that may have changed. Lexmarks and Canons often do not work and play well with Linux.

I have had nothing but excellent service from my HP Officejet Pro L7680. Before that, I had an Epson CX300 (this is getting to be ancient history); once I found the right *.ppd file, it ran like a champ.

You might check the Open Printing database. It's not complete, because it depends on volunteer contributions, but it can be useful, especially before you buy: http://www.openprinting.org/printers

I paid about US$115 for my LaserJet P1006, on sale. I would ideally like to stay in that price range, and wouldn't easily go much higher. I don't need a new printer very badly, only as a convenience.

Yes, it is. Looking up the HL-2270DW at Amazon, I see it's $99 (and their bestselling laser printer to boot); and Openprinting says it works in Linux. It might be the same Brother printer my employer has--looks similar. Thanks for the recommendation. It doesn't hurt that it also duplex prints--I had wished my P1006 did that.
