Need 56k modem for slackware

I need to get a 56k modem working under slackware 10.2 with the 2.4.31 kern. I prefer internal, but I will get an external if that is the only option. I have heard modems are hard to get workin in linux due to proliferation of 'winmodems'.

And light you can shed on what to buy, how to setup, and what win-modems are would be very much appreciated. thanks guys.

they aren't hard if you get an external as external modems are True hardware modems (not the winmodems you hear about)

I suggest 3com. I'd also suggest a serial interface, not USB. Those may be more difficult to find now since USB has become the dominant technology on the market.

3com does make hardware internal modems, but I never mess with internal due to their flaky-ness.

Hi, Servnov.

I suggest the USR5610B. I wrote a how-to on it in LQ's Answers section. It's a bit of a pain to set up, but after that it'll be nice and fast, and unlike win/softmodems, it won't eat much processor time.

Also check out http://linmodems.org/ .

A hardmodem (like the USR5610B) has its own processor on it. Soft/winmodems don't. Hardmodems are the fastest, then winmodems, then softmodems. Try google for more details.

HTH

Most serial (RS 232) modems should work ok with Linux.

I found an external 56k at a local computer shop, it even said it works with 2.4 kerns and up on the box. Its USB, hopefully I can get it working later.

slackware 56K modem

I have used a USR/3Com internal pci model with Slackware for a lonfg time, and I think it's still in production.

model 0727 or part number 3CP2976-OEM. USR calls it a HAWK.

It always configures as ttyS4 using pppsetup.

Setting it with pppsetup is a breeze. And, unlike the ISA models, it starts when it
should using ppp-go -d. Every ISA model I have will sometimes dial out without being triggered
by anything I know of.
