N00b - a hand installing my ethernet card?

Hey all, for some odd reason my current on board ethernet card stopped working. a friend suggested the modules got corrupted. either way, it's only a 10M card so i figure i'll put in a 10/100 now. i've NO idea what to do (after physically putting it in)

I couldn't find any guides online that might tell me what to do....

if anyone could tell me where to start, or point me to a site that would help, i'd much appreciate it.

I have debian running and i want to put in a belkin pci card.

Thanks

kgmf

you could try to just plug it in and boot, it is possible the card will be autodetected, or that it can use a universal module. search for something similar to " linux module belkin <modelname> "

ok i think i have a more serious problem (oh and no it didn't seem to autodetect)

modprobe -a tells me i've an invalid dependancy. that's bad right?

the girl who told me my modules were screwed metioned i could install them again or something
but she's gone now and i've no one to tell me what the hell that means....

If you have a "built-in" nic card you have to disable it first in the BIOS.
Re-boot the system, press "Del" or F2, or whatever key combination is required to access the BIOS in your PC.
Once in the BIOS, search for the built in peripherals and disable (set to NO) the Nic.
Then, you may re-boot and see if the machine detects the new nic and sets it up.
