Smile My samsung cd/dvd super writemaster is not being recognized when I install Debian.

My samsung cd/dvd writer is not being recognized when I try and install it. It shows up in the BIOS setup and the funny thing is, is that it can install ubuntu, xubuntu, edubuntu, ubuntu server and fedora. (Iam trying to build a lamp server). If any one can drop a quick post. That would be great!!! Thanks.

Try etch-n-half for Debian Stable or Lenny.

No Lenny is not 'stable' yet.. so maybe not a good choice for a production environment. For personal use it's great, and I find it to be extremely stable..

etchnhalf has a newer kernel than etch so it will detect newer hardware and things the regular etch installer will not. (2.6.24 vs 2.6.18)

Is your DVD Drive SATA by chance ?

Did you try either of the methods I mentioned above ?

I will provide a third and fourth option as well..

Debian backported installer to install etch but with better hardware support.

Debian Lenny install from USB Flash drive.

OK so I've provided 4 different options for installation.. whih one did you use ? It would help just a little to know if we are dealing with stable r testing version of Debian.

next we will need to see the output of hte following commands.

lspci - so we can see what video card you have

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE to see what errors are occuring when the display tries to start.

you can ssh into your Debian machine from another PC so you can easily cut and paste that info here.
