My microphone sometimes works and sometimes doesn't

I use skype quite often and the microphone sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I checked the volume control and the microphone setting is on. Anyone has an idea of what is going on ?
Thnx

i use skype too and i have noticed that (in my case) there are 2 mic inputs and by default mic1 is selected where i am using the front connector on my system's case which happens to be mic2. then there is also the mic boost. all this in kmix assuming you run kde.
