well, for quake 3, and com_maxfps 1 i get about 80-90fps and with com_maxfps 0 i get about 100-130 fps. this is obviously a bit low. probably driver problems? or could it just be a Xconfig setup thing?
Umm nice post, really it is. But if everyone would pay attention to the rpm and compiling, it already tells you to do that. And yes, it works just like it should. Just read through your rpm and compile screens.
quake looks good (even if it is not as high as you say it should be) but the game i'm really worried about is ut2004. On some maps i get as much as 40 fps, but on others as low as 20 which is almost unbearable. what sort of options should i have for the fglrxconfig ie the Xconfig
Well, I run an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ with a Sapphire Radeon 9800 PRO 128mb, 512mb DDR memory, on Mandrake 9.2 and I get awful framerates in UT2004(12-20, 40 if I'm lucky). I'm hoping that my friend Pwnz3r can get Gentoo working for me tonight, because I am wanting to blame Mandrake for the slowness of everything. Of course, it could and probably is the processor which is showing its age. I will be soon getting an Athlon 64 2800+, but not until PCI-X is out and ready to go.

My problem sounds VERY similar to Rhythmatic's! Mine is a Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro with 256 MB of ram. I have an AMD 2400+ with Fedora Core 1. I also get those same framerates in UT2004. Just a few questions for you to compare notes:
What drivers/video card did you have installed before this one?
What output of 'fglrxinfo' give you?
I'm thinking it might be a problem with the driver recognizing the Sapphire cards?
Thank you Giblet. I believe it mist be the order that things are loaded as I don't get any errors when installing the rpm and the auto compile starts. I get a nice set of .o files in a 2.6.x directory under modules.
The XFree86.0.log is an interesting read and maybe I'll post it. But I'll try your modprobe advice tonight.
I am seeing that this is somewhat of a Mandrake/RH thread, but when I try the same exact steps under Slackware (that is, to install my XF86Config-4 file from fglrxconfig) everything works fine, but when I try to use something that needs OpenGL, the program either crashes or receives this error:
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 144 (XFree86-DRI)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 ()
Value in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 34
Current serial number in output stream: 34
I am very curious to know if anyone has a way of fixing that above error under Slackware with an ATI Radeon 9600 XT.
Originally posted by guzugi I think i am having a similar problem. I am using the 2.4.22-1.2115.nptl kernel (Fedora core 1) with my ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (RV350) and am attempting to get it to work with the fglrx driver. Both agpgart and fglrx modules have been build and present no errors when loading. I have created my XF86Config-4 file using the included tool (fglrxconfig) but i do not get 3d acceleration with these drivers. Instead, glxinfo and fglrxinfo always show the use of the Mesa drivers and glxgears agrees as i only get about 80-100 FPS. fgl_gears will not run at all. Is it just my xconfig file that is messed up?
Exactly the same problem, though I'm using 2.4.22-1.2174.nptl (on Fedora Core 1, with a Radeon 9800 Pro). I've gone through the process, compiled a kernel interface, etc., with only warning being tainting the kernel. Still, I get ~80 FPS on glxgears, and all tests indicate Mesa rendering. A Fedora issue?
Hey! I run RH9 (pretty close to your fedora afaik) and get the tainting the kernel message also! And did almost anything possible to get 3d to work w/o luck.
Could be RH9/FD1 specific. I use 2.6.4 kernel tho? maybe that tainting is the critical thing?
