Music Cd playback problem

After reinstalling Suse 8.2 I can only play music CDs with alsaplayer in root. Neither XXMS or KscD work at all and when I try to play alsaplayer as user I get the message: 'Direct access to sound device not possible'.
I have an onboard SIS7012 soundcard.

As root or su, type "chmod a+rw /dev/dsp /dev/mixer".

Ok, I've tried typing 'chmod...' but still only get alsaplayer working in root. Only difference is Idon't get the 'Direct access...' warning any more.
XMMS in root shows the cd playing but no sound.
Can't get Kscd to open at all in either root or user.
