multiple sounds not possible

Hi,
I am facing a very irritating problem. At one instant sound from only one of the players can be heard. That is if I am listening to songs on xmms and at the same instant start mplayer, it gives an error audio device not available.Because of this the system sounds are also not heard.

My configuration is :
Kernel 2.4.22 (Mandrake 9.2) on AMD Athlon 2400+

00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8377 [KT400 AGP] Host Bridge
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8235 PCI Bridge
00:06.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
00:10.0 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 80)
00:10.1 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 80)
00:10.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 80)
00:10.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0 (rev 82)
00:11.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8235 ISA Bridge
00:11.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT8233/A/C/VT8235 PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV5M64 [RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro] (rev 15)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bye
Jods

I thought artsd supports real time sound mixing from different sources. so in principle sound from more than one player should be heard.

or am i wrong somewhere?

arts...
is a sound mixer. And you have to set all of your programs to use it, and the 2 second delay that it introduces to all sounds...

ARTSD is not the only one that can play multiple sounds. ALSA can do it and usually this is the best and more stable sound system than ARTSD. You have to spend a few hours reading through ALSA site. You will come across certain ways that might work for what you want. The file you need to edit or make is ".asoundrc". Its located or should be located in /home/username.

Many LINUX experts preferred that ARTSD is disabled or not run at all.
