Multiple Sound Instance Problems

I am having trouble running multiple applications that use sound. For example, I cannot open to xine instances playing video at the same time. The first video I open plays fine and continues to play correctly, but the other opens with no sound. The second video also hangs very quickly, usually within 10 seconds. It also will not close until I stop the sound in the other application completed.

Similarly I cannot listen to music, pause a song, and then go open a video. The video opens with no sound and hangs within seconds.

I am using KDE 3.3.2, and I use the built in motherboards sound for my system which uses kernel modules snd_ac97_codec, which is correct for it. Other information on my kernel modules that are loaded (currently using lsmod):

snd_intel8x0
snd_ac97_codec
snd_pcm_oss
snd_mixer_oss
snd_pcm
snd_timer
snd

My System specs:
Motherboard: EPOX EP-9NPA+Ultra NF4 ULTRA RT

Video Card: Geforce 6800GT 256MB DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card - ASUS EN6800/TD/256
Type VGA XFX|
Model PVT45GUDF3

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Manchester 2000MHz FSB Socket 939 Dual Core
Processor Model ADA4200BVBOX

RAM: CORSAIR XMS 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System
Memory Model CMX1024-3200C2PT
Model #:CMX1024-3200C2PT

No, the real module is snd-intel8x0. To play sound from two or more sources, you have to use dmixer in to mix multiple sounds to output to one input on the sound card. There are examples how to do this at ALSA site. Also do not forget to read the documentation about ~/.asoundrc.

Thanks for the information. Actually, the simplest solution was to use proper configuation settings on my programs. I had everything set to use OSS. When I set them all to ALSA, there was no problem.

Another piece of relavant information for this thread. I installed ubuntu 5.10, and had a similar problem with my old Mepis Linux system. I solved the multiple sound instance issue by 1) having alsa-utils run on startup as my sound-daemon, and 2) setting everything to use ALSA.
