Multiple Platforms

Hello All,

This is my first post and I am very new to Linux. Please take it easy on me if these seems like a dumb questions.

I use Mandrake 10.1 On a P4 Northwood machine at school fine, yet when I plug my harddrive into my home computer (see sig), it fails to start successfully. Could anyone perhaps explain what could possibly be the problem, or perhaps suggest some reading material so I could persue the problem further on my own?

Also, I have read that the kernel detects hardware durring startup and configures it as needed. Could anyone validate this?

Note: I have installed this OS on this machine before using the same PATA HDD I use for my school work. Also, I know there are issues with SATA HDDs, thus I disable the SATA controller in the CMOS setup before trying to boot from my PATA HDD.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

P.S.
Although fairly new to Linux, I am not stupid!!!! I know how to read and am not afraid to try any procedures that even the most seasoned Linux veteran would reconsider. So if any of you think I am too "green" to make this work, I challenge your preconcieved notion of who is who and what is what!!!

what's not working right? not a chance without more information.... tell us what happens, you can't expect much help without even saying what's not working.

Generally yes, most hardware is detected instantly on boot, it's not uncommon to be able to pick up a drive from one box place it in another and see no ill effects. the more complex the hardware is though, the more likely you are to have issues, IEE1394 or USB devices for example.

I don't think that any distro released this year should have any issues with SATA out of the box. it's settled down nicely in the last 12 months.

P.S. don't be all defensive on your first post... hardly gives a good impression of what you think of us now does it?
