I'm not sure if it's just not working any more after the power went out the other day, but I can no longer detect the card in the slot or the reader itself. I used to be /dev/sde1, but now that device doesn't exist.

I get the message /dev/sde1 special device doesn't exist. I tried looking to see what's available through fdisk -l, lspci, lsusb. I believe fdisk -l is how I first discovered the dev name to begin with, and now that it's not showing I'm a little worried.

Does anyone know how to go about detecting whether or not a ms pro duo card reader is working? Thanks.

When I plug the mmc card in now, it's not recognized, and I see no new messages in /var/log/messages or dmesg. I'm running slackware 12. I hope this info helps. Thanks.

Does my output not show a problem? AFAIK, it's broken, but have no way of telling other than I can't mount it now and when I plug the card while tail -f on /var/log/messages I don't see it mentioned.

This is a USB card reader? Have you tried it on another system? Maybe a Windows system?

It kinda looks like a hardware failure now, USB readers are mass storage devices that should work flawlessly without tweaking on modern distros.

Hey, thanks for the reply. On my computer it is an all in one card reader built in. It has 2 usb ports, 1 sd/mmc, 1 ms/ms pro, 1 cf/I/II/MD, and 1 SMC/xd port. I'm only familiar with usb, sd and ms pro duo cards right now, though. The USB works, because I use cameras and other usb devices with it.

I can no longer tell if the "ms / ms pro" port is working. I used to have it working nicely. I thought that maybe a power outage while the card was plugged in could've done it, but I thought I saw the green light when the power came on. So, if it was the electricity, it must've shorted it out a while after power came back on.

OK, it just connects internally through USB. If the other card slots are working, my bet is on a bad reader. These things are notoriously flaky, luckily they are cheap, I paid $8 for my last internal.

Alright, thanks. I'm just surprised that this built in card reader that came with the computer didn't last very long. I barely got a chance to use it. Must be because it's an e-machine .
