Hi. I am running Fedora Core 5 with the 2.6.16-1.2122 kernel, and Im looking for a cheap mp3 player. The Archos XC202S looks like a good option. It doenst specifically state linux support, and the HCL, google and forum search draws a blank, however:
It operates "drag and drop in windows explorer" so I guess thats marketing speak for its detected as a portable USB hard drive.
Its file system is FAT32.
So I should be able to detect it as a portable HDD, and transfer music directly into the files on the device
Has anyone actually got this particular mp3 player?
Thanks, Tony.
I have a Sandisk Sansa 1GB which I am able to mount in Linux as a USB drive. I don't know about the Archos, but any player which mounts as a USB drive should work in Linux.
Went out and bought one. It works fine. No probs. No ogg vorbis support, but I knew that when I got it. Anyone know a good app that will convert ogg into format? Thanks. Tony.
If you use KDE, it is possible to convert songs in K3b very easily. Of course lame must be installed. Drag the songs as you would burn them, but instead clicking on the appearing "Burn" button press on the blue arrow in the project window (the one just right of the "Burn" button). You must then change the used codec (if you only convert to mp3 you can save as user preference, so it will remember which codec to use).
Btw. what do you think of your Archos player? I'm thinking of buying one. Have you tried it on an older 2.6 Kernel (I have 2.6.12, so I'm asking)?
There have been no compatability issues with the player. Works fine as a FAT32 portable storage device. You just navigate the filesystem, drag and drop.
However... the player itself is rather buggy. As I sit here, I am waiting for it to run out of battery, as it froze up on the splash screen as I turned it on. There is no way to shut it off. I cant remove the battery, or anything. It will freeze up like this once or twice a month or so. It especially happens when the battery is around a quarter charged. It bugs the hell outta me. Id advise avoiding this player.
... but the player has already been ordered. Let's hope the bug is fixed in new firmware. That is, it's not that easy to find another player with around 20GB which works under Linux at this price where I live (other option would be Win98, but finding a new player for this OS is next to impossible).
