Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I have mandrake 10 installed on my home PC its a P3 with 256MB RAM
Can I just take my Hard Drive out and plug it into another PC (P4 with 256MB RAM) and than try to boot with my Hard drive on that PC.
Will I be able to successfully boot mandrake linux on other system or will it crash like WinXP does in the same scenario ?
Distribution: Slackware, Windows, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Mac OS X
I've done this several times, without problems. You may face some configuration issues, I had to reconfigure x to use the new video card, reconfigure my sound and nic, as they were all different hardware, other than that, you should be fine.
I have tried swapping the hard disk and plugged it in other PC (as I have said above about it)
Now what happened is that (to me ) it looks like that some kind of problem with the hard disk itself has occurred as when I try to boot from hard drive it says "boot failure"
I have tried installing WinXP and Win98 but during the setup the installer says that read/write error with hard drive
When I check BIOS IDE configuration it has my hard drive detected as a Primary Master ?
do you have a boot loader correctly pointing to the right kerenl and /root directory of the hard drive you have just installed on this other PC. Your hard drive may not be broken but you may just need to install/reconfigure lilo or grub.
The current status of your system is a little unclear. Installing the drive in a different PC should be fine (as others have already said) but if you can't boot from it then perhaps it is just jumpered incorrectly and/or the cables are not firmly seated. That may not be the issue but it's something to check -- J.W.

Last night I again tried to install WinXP ,it is taking too much time to access hard disk as a cursor keeps on blinking and blinking on the screen before anything happens.
When installing Windows installer showed me all the partitions and the setup files got copied to the hard drive but when it rebooted after copying the files it failed to boot from the hard disk?(obviously than I was booting from the hard drive ,not from the CD-ROM)
I have again checked my hard drive with my home PC (from where I actually took it)
it functioning properly here and there are no problems
While it was not working with the other PC as I had mentioned previously, can any one help me, as the same hard drive failed to boot on the other PC as I had mentioned before.
