Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Moving files from a Linux hard drive to a Windows Vista Premium hard drive

I just bought a new PC and it has Windows Vista Premium on it, my old machine had Mandrake Mandriva Linux on it.
I hooked up my old drive to my new computer and I cannot access it, is there any way of making windows acknowledge that the Linux drive is there.
I have pictures of my daughter when she was only 20 minutes old on the Linux drive, and they are pretty important to me.
Every time I reboot my machine it tells me that there is another drive, but it cannot find the drivers to access it.
I have gone into device manager and it says that the controller is not working properly, and there are no drivers installed.
Is there anyone who can help me retrieve these files from my Linux drive.

Thanks and have a great day

The Wolf

Windows only supports it's own filesystems (NTFS and FAT 16/32), so it can't see the files stored on a drive written to by any other operating system (unless, obviously, that operating system saved them on a FAT/NTFS partition).

There are projects to allow Windows to read other filesystems, but you didn't specify which filesystem you were using, so we can't actually suggest one of them yet. Generally speaking I have found them to be a bit unstable, but they are probably good enough for what you need. Though come to think of it, I don't know off hand if they are going to work on Vista.

Alternately, you could transfer them over the network if the computer that had Mandriva installed is still workable. Or even save them onto a USB device such as a flash drive, and move them over that way (since flash drives are always formatted to FAT 16/32).

Not important enough to make a backup of them, I guess.

After having said that
A external USB enclosure for the HD, a Linux live CD and you have another way to get them back (if the HD has not died).

FYI this thread is over three years old. Since this was the only post the OP made, hopefully all the pictures were recovered.
