I somtimes loose the mouse while I'm working, and recently it sometimes stopped being recognized when booting. Last time this happened, I checked and had no /dev/mouse.
I can live with this happening, but how can I reset the mouse? I can CTR-ALT-F5 and root in, but when I try "sudo init 1" and then "sudo init 2" I still have no mouse. Also, CTR-ALT-BKSP does not restore my mouse.
It is a ps/2 mouse, from the brand A4. It is wireless, also with a wireless keyboard. Note that I have absolutly no problems with it when I boot into WinXP on the same machine (dual boot).
I'm having exactly the same problem. I just installed SUSE 9.3 yesterday and everything was going fine the rest of the day. This morning the mouse pointer was frozen on the screen. I tried restarting X and even rebooting but still nothing. When I booted with a live cd it worked so I know it's not the hardware. I am connected via a KVM shared by 2 other computers. They both work fine.
Thanks for mentioning checking for /dev/mouse. I don't have one either.
I an expert would respond with a solution I would appreciate it, and I am sure the original poster would also.
I found the answer to my problem on this form several pages down. I don't know how to link to that thread in a message, but the fix for me was simple. I just put in as root:
ln -s /dev/input/mice /dev/mouse
and the problem cleared up immediately. I seems like X is looking for the device in the wrong place. The above command just creates a symbolic link to redirect from the old location to the new.

Hope this helps you too.
Do you do this when the problem occurs, or should it be performed beforehand to prevent the problem?
