Unhappy Mouse pointer freezes after login - Kubuntu 6.06

Hi Guys

My Kubuntu box has developed a bizzare problem in that my mouse cursor freezes after I login.

This is the sequence of events:

1) Turn on computer and boot into the KDE log in screen (mouse is working at this point)
2) Enter my Username and password and press enter (mouse is still working)
3) The Kubuntu/KDE splash screen appears and the loading icons slowly light up one by one (mouse is still working)
4) Then it gets to the 'Restoring Session' icon and my mouse freezes.
5) KDE fully boots up and my mouse is dead.
6) I log out using the keyboard and go back to the log in screen. My mouse comes back to life!

Anyone have an answer to this strange behaviour? I'd like to point out that my mouse had been working fine before. It's only been in the last week or so that this has started happening. So I guess I've done something wrong in that time

Weird behaviour.

Something to think about:
If you have a badly configured session saved and then automatically restored, you'll get this kind of behaviour.
Do you have KDE set up to "Restore Previous Session"? If so then set up KDE to default to "Restore manually saved session" (For kubuntu it is in K-System Settings - KDE Components - Session Manager, but the menus may have changed so just find it somewhere in the K menus!), then try K-Save Session when you have KDE in a workable state and a clean, empty desktop. This should solve your problems.

If all else fails, you can log out of KDE, get to a text terminal (<CTL><ALT><F1>), login as yourself at the text screen, and move your /home/me/.kde directory to /home/me/.kde.old (Code= mv /home/me/.kde /home/me/.kde.old) and then exit and login again at the graphical terminal (<CTL><ALT><F7>). Your /home/me/.kde will be re-created with sensible defaults, but you will loose all your KDE customisation settings.

Thanks for the reply.

I manually saved a new session but the problem persists. The mouse froze a little later in the KDE loading process though. It froze just after the splash screen disapeared and the desktop loaded.

I'm tempted to delete my .kde directory as you suggested, but I am worried about the effect this could cause. When you say i'd lose all of my KDE settings, how far does it go? Will I lose my wallpaper, menu items and Konqueror settings for example?

Actually, perhaps I should create a new user first to see if that fixes it. If it does then I know for sure that I have a problem with my personal configuration. If it still doesn't work with the new user then I know i've got a more serious problem on my hands

A: Just about everything you customised in KDE after you first installed it. You won't loose your wallpaper file, but you will have to reselect it as your choice. Menu items may change, konq preferences will.
It'd be a good idea to create a new user, and see if they too have a problem with the mouse. If so, there's no point in you renaming your ~/.kde directory. (The whole point of renaming that directory was so you could rename it back if things were no better).

I deleted my .kde directory and my mouse sprang back to life

I've found the cause of the problem too! When I restarted the Lirc daemon my mouse froze. So it appears that my remote control is conflicting with my mouse somehow.

I'll have to go over my Lirc configuration again and see if I can find the fault. My knowledge of Lirc isn't that great (I set it up using a tutorial), but at least I know the cause of my computer problems now.

I've disabled lirc for the time being until I find a fix
