mouse/keybooard problems

Hi there,

I'm new-ish to linux and have been running Mandriva for a couple of weeks after a while dabbling with Knoppix every now and again. Mandriva installed, no problems, mouse and keyboard working fine, seemingly no problem with any resources.

Now, though, the keyboard and mouse seem just... .slow. They are not responding anywhere near quick enough, and I'm not sure what would cause this, except maybe stretched system resources.

I'm running Mandriva with KDE, on a 2.52Ghz Pentium 3 machine, with 512MB DDR memory, plenty of free hard disk space over 2 HDDs... the kind of spec you would expect to cope with Mandriva and KDE quite easily. So what's going on then?

Your help muchly appreciated.

- Matt

try su - to root, and run top to see how many processes are running.

does booting off a live cd have the same effect?

linux doesnt usually break itself... is it possible your systems security has been comprimised?

is there alot of unusual disk or network activity?
