That may give the udev or had daemons a kick in the pants. I think that it should happen as you want.
You might want to post your /etc/fstab file.
If you enter: udevinfo -q env -p /sys/block/scd
Does it print out information about your drive?
Check if the udevd and dbus daemons are running. The /etc/fstab entry created by Fedora will give a hint what helper program is mount the filesystem. What is the value of the type field (3rd field)?

"no record for '/block/scd' in database" when typing
# udevinfo -q env -p /sys/block/scd
automount doesn't seem to be used to mount my internal cdrom drive anyway (which is working fine) becuase auto.misc was #'ed out in auto.master
