Mounting NTFS Drives / Partitions

Hello,

I know that kernel 2.6 write permissions is allow to NTFS drives / partitions but I hear it is still unstable and can cause damage or corrupt files to the NTFS drives / partitions so here is my questions.

Question1:

How would one mount a winXP NTFS drive so you can write to it.

Question2:

Should you do this or only make it read only mount.

Question3:

How does linux handle USB hard drives as they are typically formated with NTFS partitions no ?

I would recommend installing the fuse package and the ntfs-3g package instead. The ntfs-3g driver is written outside of the kernel which is a lot easier way to develop. As a result, it has progressed farther.

You need to modprobe the fuse kernel module. Then you can use the "ntfs-3g" filesystem type in place of "ntfs".

Most usb thumb drives and chip memory uses the fat32 filesystem. Some very large external drives use ntfs. I simply reformat them with a Linux filesystem.

I read/write to NTFS usb drives from Fedora and also access NTFS partitions on WinXP and Vista dual boot setups with Fedora 7 and 8. I have yet to corrupt either but I'll keep trying.

hey brother....
i'm using Fedora 7...with NTFS filesystem on my windows...try this out

[root@localhost ~]# cd /
[root@localhost /]# mount -t ntfs /dev/sda5 /mnt/D

this thing always works for me...
another thing is using a force option to force mont the ntfs FS..

[root@localhost ~]# cd /
[root@localhost /]# mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda5 /mnt/D -o force
