I would also like to know how to mount the hard drive directly through my USB 1 port.

Hi.
I have a pcmcia usb2 card, and I loaded it correctly using EHCI and OHCI kernel modules (using 2.6.3. If I remember right the default module for usb is UHCI).
Once you connect the pcmcia and the drive to the usb, the hotplug or the *hci modules will create a device under the /dev directory (normally /dev/sda1). After that you can mount it as a normal partition.
I don't think an usb2 hd will work on the usb1 pc port.
