mounting cd-rom in Redhat 9

Hi,

I'm a novice, so please shoot.

I've just installed RedHat 9 on my other pc, and I run into some problems. The first is that mounting cd's won't work. After instructing to mount the player, he says bzzzz for a while and then an error message pops up. When asking for details, RH states that it didn't found a directory.

I'm sure the cd's allright (it works under XP).

Can it be that the file system is different?

What should I do?

Thanks,

Balthasar

What device the cd-rom is? Probably /dev/hdc ...
What user are you when you mount (root maybe?)?
What error message do you get?

hi BalK, welcome to lq. is this an audio cd? if so you don't mount it.it should just play automagically.

The error message is (translated from Dutch)

Nautilus is not able to mount the selected volume.

If I click the button Details, it says:

mount: Not a directory.

This happens when I try data cd-roms. Audio cd's are able to find the automagic function.

I do not know the name of the cd player. I suppose it is cdrom.

The error is the same for logging on as a regular user or as a root user.

try looking in the /mnt/cdrom directory, instead of the /dev/cdrom directory.

I've tried. This results in the same error, or in an empty folder. It just seems that the OS can't read the information on the disc.

Here's some clarification for newbies if there is:

/dev/hda -> Primary master first ide controler (IDE0)
/dev/hdb -> Slave first ide controler (IDE0)
/dev/hdc -> Primary master second ide controler (IDE1)
/dev/hdd -> Slave second ide controler (IDE1)

So there's how to know what /dev/hdX to use :-)
