Question Mounting a second cd/dvd drive in Kubuntu

Hi there

I have recently added a DVD drive to my Linux computer running Kubuntu 7.04.

I installed Kubuntu using my first drive (cdrom0), and I am unsure how to mount my second drive - a DVD-ROM drive. Both devices are connected through cable select, and I am able to put CD's into both, yet Kubuntu doesn't expect them coming from the second drive.

I attempted to mount the DVD drive via the console and by adding a line to fstab, however I am unsure what to write as it is a DVD drive and not a CD.

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
DHulme

Try this in your /etc/fstab:

/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

per 'man mount': udf is the "Universal Disk Format" filesystem defined by the Optical Storage Technology Association, and is often used for DVD-ROM.

No luck. I enter the line, reboot it reports a crash, I put in the CD, it starts to read, then stops. Any more ideas anyone?

Could try:

/dev/dvd /media/dvd udf,iso9660 owner,users,noauto 0 0

Need to make sure the /media/dvd directory exists. If not create it before editing the fstab.

If that doesn't work need you to post your original fstab and the output of:
ls -l /dev/hd*

Doesn't seem to work. Here's my fstab with the line recommended at the end:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# /dev/sda1
UUID=9d7740b1-5d24-4746-a263-0ad63a939ed4 / ext3 nouser,defaults,errors=remount-ro,atime,auto,rw,dev,exec,suid 0 1
# /dev/sda5
UUID=d4b8e194-3ec9-40fb-b078-017f0e71232b none swap sw 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,atime,noauto,rw,dev,exec,suid 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto user,atime,noauto,rw,dev,exec,suid 0 0

/dev/dvd /media/dvd udf,iso9660 owner,users,noauto 0 0

When I execute the command from the konsole, it says it can't find any such directories.

K. Kubuntu does it different.

/dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,atime,noauto,rw,dev,exec,suid 0 0

Would try that. Make sure again all appropriate directories and devices exist. I guess the command to check for the new dvd player would be ls -l /dev/scd*. Not absolutely sure though.

The DVD is readable in a known-working computer?

Oh its fine now, I've just replaced my CD drive with the new DVD drive, I no longer have two drives, but at least I can play DVD's now.

Thanks anyway,
Dhulme
