Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Motherboard on-board audio not detected

I have an ASUS K8V motherboard with on-board audio (VIA VT8237 ADI AD1980 SoundMAX) that I want to use as a second sound device along with my PCI SoundBlaster Live! EMU10k1 card. In the past I've only used the SBLive!, but I recently decided I'd like to use both. As I've been trying to setup ALSA to use both cards I've run into this problem: whenever the PCI SoundBlaster Live! card is physically installed, the on-board audio is not detected at all (doesn't show up in lspci, scanpci, /proc/pci or any where else). If I take the SBLive! card out, the on-board audio is detected and works fine; put the SBLive! back in, the on-board audio doesn't exist again. The on-board audio is enabled in the BIOS, and other than removing & reinstalling the SBLive! nothing else is changed. So obviously somehow the SBLive! is conflicting with the on-board audio, but I have no idea where. A quick google search found enough lspci outputs listing both SBLive! card and the VIA VT8237 audio chip that I'm pretty sure they should be able to work together (or at least both be detected), but I don't know why it's not for me. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Running kernel 2.6.7-gentoo-r14
