Listen!! You have to look in the monitor's specs. There is a horizontal and vertical frequency range. Then, you need to know the monitors native resolution, color depth, and vertical refresh. You need to know if your video card supports those values. Wide screen formats usually are not supported on video cards more than two years old. Once you know the horizontal and vertical frequency ranges you can put those in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. See specs for Dell 1500FP LCD Monitor:
