monitor question
 

I know that this sounds silly but i have changed my LG studioworks to an old monitor that i don't know nothing about ( not even the brand ), my computer has slackware on and i tried to lower its resolution to a ugly 640x480 and also i choose the lowest frequency available (through xf86config) but still i get a very narrow display (nearly 1/3 of it's size) . the following is in the back of the monitor ( hope this help):

don't know your monitor (yet) but has it an osd?
then boot the crappy m$ and see what refresh it runs.
Do you have the monitor floppy by any chance ?
if so check the .inf file for the needed info.

thanks man , what is an osd ? how can i know the ''refresh'' on windows ? and i don't have no floppy .

Osd; on screen display, a kind of pop up display on
your monitor, mostly used to alter settings and show info.
Escom used to be a reseller brand, known in germany
mainly, but at that time (they passed away sadly enough)
they had stores in other parts of europe as well.
So you can use both escom and hightech international
trading.
And the one showing up in google is about how to repair
it, due to hardware faillure. I found some other threads, but
no info. Just that it can run in 1024x800 but no refresh.
Maybe try some specific german sites; use this;
http://dict.tu-chemnitz.de/ to translate german-english
I know that 60hz is mostly on the safe site, maybe try 70 or
72 hz. Be carefull tho ! You can fry it; if your monitor starts
sqeaking at you then that's a cry for help. ;)

BTW i want to make a quick mandrake install to check what are the settings (?)(mandrake can identify with a good safety margin what the heck is this piece of junk' frequency) it's the long way home but it's the only thing i can think of . thanks again for the help , to know that there are other people you can count on to solve problems is grand .

i 've done some experimenting in winbloze, and the actual
refresh is somewhere in the register, u just have to squeeze
it out.
Fire up regedit
Possibility 1;
take a look in HKEY_LOCALMACHINE -Config -0001
- Display -Settings ; maybe RefreshRate "XX" shows up
if there is a sane value in it; bingo! That's the one
To be certain compare resolution and colordepth entries.

Possibility 2;
If there is a -1 in it it, it is using the setting provided by the
chosen/detected monitor Then you have to do a search
on RefreshRate (mark only the second and fourth box, in your search box, mine are dutch should be Values ? and ..... )
Maybe hit the f3 key one or two times. Somewhere in ....... -Display -0001 the available modes,vert freq. range and resolutions show up.
Pick the one you know that is running now, for inst. Modes 16 -1024,800 there should be a range and the wanted
RefreshRate.

Possibility 3
If there is nothing in Possibility 1 (no -1 nor RefreshRate) then the monitor runs on default; (that is mostly 60 Hz )
Do the same searches and pick the first entry in Mode -resolution
Hope this makes any sense, cause i could check the things
i changed on my osd.
What Monitor driver does windows detect anyway or is it
using some default like supervga.

Sorry if i didn´t reply earlier but i just couldn´t , my power supply was damaged twice by sudden current changes , the second one last just one boot , but you know what they say : when the going gets tough, the tough gets going .
Well i changed the monitor driver on windows to a Super vga 800x600 and it worked good , so i stick with that on linux . The refresh rate was no different , i just tried the lower settings and they worked fine .
Here is my problem now : when i startx i get only half of the monitor ( let me try to explain this better : the half monitor i get shows about the same size of the kde 3.0 startup block (?) , so when you try to reach almost anything i just can´t .

I tried :

-Ctrl alt +,- to change resolution but nothing happend ;
-The question (xf86config) about whether i want a screen bigger than the actual size , or something like that (forgive please) ,i answered both yes and no several times with no results ;
-Finally , and more interesting , i managed to connect a different monitor (Samtron 56 E 1024x768@61 Hz NI) and i got the same problem that i just stated : only a small part of the entire screen is viewable.

I am almost sure that there is something with my configuration but i don´t know what , can you help me here ?

Maybe you can use an ups to save your power supply,
it can in certain situations, prevent against thunderstorm
damage as well.

for some quick things; check your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
and see if there is a line; Virtual " " in your Display
section (or subsection) if so get rid of it.
Maybe use xvidtune to trim several settings, be carefull
with that.

it´s kind of huge box (not that the size matters) and i was told before to get a ups , but the problem is too expensive, about US$300 ??? ( here everything is quite expensive , for instance my power supply Pentium 4 and AMD certified cost me about US$100 ) . well
