Angry monitor problem

I just bought a new computer (emachines 1.7 ghz) but I still have an older monitor (Compaq v410). With Windows XP, the monitor works fine, but when I put Red Hat 8 on it, the text-based stuff looked fine, but the graphical interface looks "compressed" - the horizontal size is fine, but the vertical is way too short, like "letterbox" or something. I made sure the vertical sync rate was correct, and I'm not sure what else to check. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
