monitor off / blank

I wonder if I can blank my monitor any other way than blanking the screen ( black ).
At this moment, my monitor is blanked as a all-black-screen ( power led stays green and the screen keeps a dim glow ).
I know that under Windows you can shutdown your monitor in a way that it really powers down to a power-save mode ( power led turns orange ).
I could not find any such option under Linux.( I also do not know where to look .... )
... help ?!

Thanks for responding arunshivanandan .

I looked, but I do not see anything that remotely looks like anything I need to solve my problem.
What is ( or is not ) there what I can use ?

There's other options you can pass to apmd, check out what apm will take, also this is probably most easily controlled through BIOS, my machine has the option, I remember switching to slackware and screen blank would kick in about a minute ahead of monitor poweroff. I assume you want this as an idle call after say 15 minutes or so, right?

Cheers,

Ha ! Found it myself ....
I don't know how I got there anymore, but at http://www.linuxhq.com/ldp/howto/min.../powersav.html I found that I should have set option ¨DPMS in the monitor section of the /etc/X11/XF86Config file.

That worked ! My monitor first blanks, then shuts off (power-led orange ). When I activate mouse / keybord you hear the monitor highvoltage crisp and it's on again.
The highvoltage crisp is the sign that the monitor was fully powered down.

Note, that there are more interesting stuff on the site mentioned ( vsync blanking / hd spin down / ..etc... )

Thanks all for helping, hope this helps some else too

Oops ...

I was so happy I found it finally, that I forgot to mention that the option DPMS does not regulate the powersave, but only indicates that the monitor is able to handle the powersave options.

My Xscreensaver program regulates when to kick in the screensaver, blank the screen and shutoff the monitor.
Of caurse this program is only a shell that passes command to some more basic program. ... I don't know which program or service handles this. ( apmd ... as Finegan suggested ? )
