monitor displays nothing after logon

I have Fedora core 3 installed. I changed the monitor config to "generic 1024x768". Now after the user is logged on the monitor displays nothing. The monitor is an older NCR 15in monitor. After the logon all the lights on the monitor flash (this means the is an incompatibility between what the system is set for and what the monitor will except). How do I boot to a point where I can correct the problem and go back to "undefined" at 800x600 (atleast that works)?

Well if you can get to a terminal (try ctrl-alt-F6) then edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Go down to the monitor section and change it for the relevant bit density (?)

Can't see anything after logon user id and password.

Is it a graphical login thing ie kdm, gdm or xdm? If it is try ctrl-alt-F6 before you login then login to a terminal.

No, it is a straight Linux logon, and as soon as you press enter on the password, the lights on the monitor start flasihing. Tried the ctrl-alt-f6 and it had no effect.

Well if you can boot a live CD and then mount your hard drive you can change it from there.

I tried Knoppix, but it said I did not have authority to do that. It might be that I don't know what I am doing with it also. If any one knows how to mount the harddrive under Knoppix bootable CD, please let me know. Thanks

I added a "3" to the end of the GRUB boot command and then loged on as Root and copied the xorg.config.backup over the top of the xorg.config file and then was able to boot OK. Problem solved.
