Modifying screen resolution

Hi everyone. I'm using a Slackware Linux machine and have a monitor that supports 1280x1024 @60Hz resolution. Unfortunately (as you have guessed) i cannot achieve this. I am currently stuck in 1024x768 and if i go to a lower resolution (which i tried for kicks using the KDE configuration tool) X org freezes my system! I had to do a hard boot. I have tried about 4 or 5 times to use xorgconfig with no luck. It does change the xorg.config file but produces no changes on my screen... So any help would be much appreciated. Here is some info on my system:

What motherboard do you have?

Is it capable of those resolutions?

What monitor do you have?

If you have or can download the owners manual for monitor, look through the specs sheet and see if it provides values for horizontal sync and vertical refresh rate. Check and see if these match what's in your xorg.conf file located in /etc/X11.
