Running Mandrake 10.1 and evidently there is no driver being detected for my modem, which is a CXT Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP (whatever that is).
Anybody have any idea where I can get a driver for this modem?
This seems to be a Conexant HSF modem. Go to www.linuxant.com and download the HSF driver for your kernal. You can find your kernal number by using
uname -r
on the command line.
uhhhhhhhmmm. not sure. basically, i just downloaded and installed the driver from linuxant, then went to ' configure your computer', selected, network & internet, new connection, selected modem option, /dev/modem/, gave it my dial up number, asked it check the status, then i get "doesn't appear to be connected to internet".
as far as Kppp, i'm obviously new to the linux world so not sure what that is. perhaps i'm missing something completely obvious!
interesting. i got kppp loaded and it seems to find the modem okay. it then even apparently connects (at least it says it has a connection) although it no websites ever come up.
when i'm back in the office and plugged into our fractional T1, everything works fine with respect to the browser etc.
Try clicking on Details in the Kppp Connection Window and see if you have any response to internet activity. From time to time one of my internet numbers gives me a flat line, i.e. 0 KB/sec activity and I switch to another number where activity will be somewhere in the 3.9 to 5.9 KB/sec range.
1. Turn off your firewall temporarily
2. Make sure your ISP is linux friendly. AOL is not unless you have special dialer
3. Type ATZ in 'query modem' tab of Kppp -should come back OK
4. pickup extension phone immediately after dialing and listen for 'handshake'
5. If you have messed with the internet settings in MCC, Mandrake is known for getting confused. The /etc/resolv.conf file gets screwy. before you connect, there should be nothing in this file if you are using auto DHCP. After you connect, there should be the address of your ISP. This is a temporary file- this is normal
6. Your post doesn't indicate if this is a PCI modem. If continue with problems- consider external serial port modem - no drivers needed, generally faster than internal PCI modems, buy 'em cheap ($5 at thrift shops).
