From linux, try looking through the results of lspci or lshw which should give you a model number or name of the modem. Chances are it is a Winmodem (i.e. software modem) and may not have a linux driver. Software modems use your CPU to handle controlling the modem, and the drivers are usually closed source proprietary stuff written only for Windows. Some have been reverse engineered to work in linux.

What is the model number of the laptop? Linux on laptops or Tuxmobil may have help saying the modem does or doesn't work...

This place will help you http://www.linmodems.org/

They have a scan modem tool that will help you identify your modem
