Mirroring X Display with two different graphics cards

Is it possible to mirror a X display across two different graphics cards? Namely I am looking into an external display adapter that there support says only works as a separate X display.

Ideas/input?

I've heard that it's impossible to use 2 graphic cards simultaneously.
