MIDI devices and Linux

What is the best way to connect MIDI devices with a Linux machine? Some sound cards have a MIDI/joystick controller port; there are MIDI-to-USB adaptors (for MS Windows, anyway); etc. Are certain products more compatible with Linux than others?

And once I have MIDI devices hooked up, can you recommend some good Music sequencing/composition software for Linux?

Me, too :D, I want to know good music editors. I currently use Rosegarden and Noteedit, waiting for the successor of Noteedit, Canorus (https://canorus.berlios.de/wiki/index.php/Main_Page). I don't use MIDI connections, though, but I once managed to receive MIDI data via the controller port, had to use MPU401 modules, but now I don't know exactly.

For USB/Midi linux compatibility you can start with this list:

For USB/Midi interfaces The Roland/Edirol UM devices (not sure of current numbering) used to have good linux support and documentation (easy to Google). It's a few years since I looked at this so things might have changed a bit.
