Microsoft MN 520 newbie help!!!
 

I've been trying to configure my wireless PCMCIA card in RH 9.0 for days now! I'm a total newbie....

I'm using a KDS notebook.

My wireless card is the Microsoft Wireless PCMCIA card MN 520.

After reading past posts, I've found out that this card is supported in Linux. Correct?

This is where I am so far:

I added the following to /etc/pcmcia/config :

card "Microsoft Wireless Notebook Adapter MN-520 1.0.3"
version "Microsoft", "Wireless Notebook Adapter MN-520", "", "1.0.3"
bind "orinoco_cs"

After reboot, I got two beeps, and lights on my wireless card came on.

When I go into System Settings - Network, I get the following message:

Warning!
eth0 has an alias to module 8139too in modules.conf, instead of currently loaded module orinoco_cs!

Under devices, only my on-board ethernet adapter (RealTek) is listed. The wireless card doesn't even show up.

When I type in ifconfig eth1 up, (eth0 is my ethernet adapter I believe, and eth1 should be my wireless adapter?) it tells me that it couldn't find the device.

/sbin/lsmod lists hermes, orinoco, and orinoco_Cs.

When I type in /sbin/cardctl ident :

Product info: "Microsoft", Wireless Notebook Adapter MN - 520", "", "1.0.3"
Manfid: 0x02d2, 0x0001
Function: 6 (Network)

I'm a total newbie, anything that I've tried above is from the posts that I found on LQ.

I had the same card working in linux on my laptop some time ago. I will give you the steps that worked in RH 8.0 (sorry I never put 9.0 on my laptop).

First off, if eth0 is "bind" to a different driver that shouldn't be a problem because it is your internal NIC. Assuming your MN-520 is eth1 make the appropriate entry in your modules.conf: alias eth1 orinoco_cs
Now when you restart, it will start your hermes, orinoco, and orinoc_cs for you.
If you are a gui type person you can do a #redhat-config-network to bring up the Network configuration utility. You should see your device listed in the box. Highlight it and click edit. You will then see all of the relevant settings. Go to the wireless settings tab, (these are my settings)

Mode: Ad-Hoc
Network Name: Specified, SSID_NAME
Channel: 1
Transmit Rate: Auto
Key: 12345678

If you are a CLI person I can walk you through that way if the above doesn't work.

i am having a problem with my mn-520 as well, however i beleive it is because it is trying to start the card before the pcmcia is started while the computer is booting, do any of you have any ideas, redhat 9, toshiba tecra 780cdm

I have the same problem. But I am using CLI.

When booting, it gives this
cardmgr[51] watching 2 sockets

Which I am not sure about. I still have no connection to my LAN. Help!

All network services start before the pcmcia is even loaded and I get all kinds of errors. I have the same card: the MN-520 trying to load on SUSE linux 8.2

prism 2 - the orinoco 13 series drivers work quite well. As do wlan-ng and hostap.
