Mepis - Current hardware suggestions for Slide Scanning
 

Have posted this question in hardware as that is the first step, in trying to accomplish a project of scanning slides, and creating an Open Office impress presentation I would like to have completed before thanksgiving...

Eight Kodak carousels full of slides that I would like to scan, is there a suggestion for a flat bed scanner, that has a decent attachment and Linux software...

I am certain many of the slides can be left off this project, but they need to be scanned and moved to digital media (preserved).

What hardware? Vuescan seems to be available for Linux but the biggest problem is going to be the hardware that is compatible with a Debian Based Linux Operating System...

Any suggestions?

I have a Acer ScanPriza 640U, but no attachment for that flatbed scanner and so far my results are not adequate moving the images into Gimp.

I have an Epson Perfection 2480 scanner with an attachment for negatives and slides that works in Linux. This model is a few years old now.

Using Linux Mint/Ubuntu, I had to install libsane-extras to get it to work properly.

The attachment is a scan of a negative. A scan of a slide would produce something similar.

It does work better in Windows, unfortunately.

If I understand you correctly, you have your Epson Perfection working with VueScan software? You had to install libsane-extras to get VueScan to work in your Mint O/S?

The image you posted was good, using gimp you should be able to correct and balance the colors easily...

Thanks I would appreciate if you could clarify my understanding on the VueScan software. Did VueScan install your drivers or did you need to find and extract the scanner drivers? Are you running the basic or advance version of VueScan in a 32-bit or 64-bit Mint?

If you have access to a Canon D660U Flatbed Scanner they come with an adapter which does a good job of scanning 35mm slides. I myself have ever only used it with Windows but have only recently found that there are now drivers for it within Linux. Evidently the Plustek drivers have had necessary drivers included within it by the coder.

I will be trying it myself in next couple of days as I have had the scanner sitting in my cupboard for past 2 years because I had not had any luck in the past with drivers. I have found the scanner to be a very good one in past use though.

No, I just installed xsane. This is the usual application for debian-based operating systems. I also installed quiteinsane, but this mainly works inside the Gimp.

The applications installed are - xsane, xsane-common, xsane-doc, libsane and libsane-extras. I am using 32-bit Linux Mint, but I know xsane works with this scanner in Ubuntu and Debian. I didn't need to install anything else to get it to work.

I see that Epson just released a new model in the Perfection Line, a V600 Photo scanner... But every thing I have read so far indicates their updated software is only for Win7 and Snow Leopard O/S...

Presume Epson's Linux oversite can be overcome/sidestepped...

Sorry, I don't know about the latest model. I used to have to download the Linux driver from Epson/Epkowa, but it's now included in xsane-extras.

I suspect you might have a bit of trouble getting the latest model to work.
