maximum resolution too low with AMD catalyst drivers

im having a really annoying issue with being unable to get the full 1080p out of my monitor.. im using an AMD HD7950 graphics card and trying to use the catalyst drivers.. xrander | grep maximum gives me a maximum of 1600x1600 and refuses to let me add a 1920x1080 mode to it

when i go into amdcccle, 1600x1200 is the maximum itll allow me to use.. also, xrandr says this monitor is CRT1, though its an LED LCD monitor using DVI, under the open source drivers xrandr listed by device as DVI-0

any ideas?.. this is a really annoying issue

seems the beta drivers were updated more recently to deal with later versions of xserver, im going to try this and see if these work better

omg im so relieved.. ive been working on this problem for about 3 days now, browing forums all across the internet with any keywords i think may have yielded me the results i needed.. but the beta drivers allowed me a maximum of 16384 x 16384, allowing me to use cvt 1920 1080 60 to get the mode, create the mode, add it, and then went into xorg.conf and added the mode-line and the default mode settings there.. logged out and back in and its working perfect.. 100% function catalyst beta drivers with linux mint

well, im having issues again.. I went to change the clock settings in cinnamon and it all went bad.. the gui started glitching out and upon restarting, theres no system tray, no task bar, just the wallpaper and desktop icons and nothing loads.. tried updating some of the packages I had.. now it wont even boot.. this is so frustrating.. why cant the graphics drivers just work.. im getting tired of AMD at this point

What is wrong with using the radeon gallium driver?

jason41987 11-04-2013 11:12 PM

in all the benchmarks ive looked at between the catalyst, gallium, the open source ati driver, the catalyst just dominates over anything else in performance, and i will be using this computer for gaming so its important to get the catalyst drivers working properly

hmm.. this is interesting, from the AMD website.. description of the beta driver says this

Xorg/Xserver 7.4 and above (up to 1.14)

now, wouldnt 1.14 be a lower version than 7.4 or am i missing something?.. anyway, im going to try to figure out the version of xorg i have, make sure its not too new of a version, any idea how to prevent any upgrades from upgrading this package in the future?

anyway.. says xserver-xorg-core can only be upgraded to 1.13, so its not a xorg compatibility issue.. has to be something else thats causing this problem

i actually figured out what was going wrong and it wasnt the drivers fault.. see, i installed steam for linux and they made some attempt to install the drivers they wanted which caused some sort of a crash with the catalyst beta drivers.. so using the package i had already downloaded, i reinstalled the drivers and its been working flawlessly since.. i have no issues running the beta drivers now on my full 1920x1080 resolution
