Mandrake and Samsung SyncMaster 173s

i just got a new Samsung SyncMaster 173s and i changed the vsync and hsync on my x display control center thing, but when i start my computer, after the nvidia logo shows up, i get this really scratchy screen for about 2 seconds, and on kde, if i right click and then click logout, my screen gets really scratchy with horizontal lines. it doesnt seem very good, is this normal, and how can i fix it?
