Mandrake 9.1 IBM Thinkpad 600E Woes

Greetings folks,
I am trying to install Mandrake 9.1 on my Thinkpad 600E. Everything works wonderfully except for sound. I am getting all kinds of stange errors during boot up:

/lib/modules/2.4.19-5mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cs46xx.o.gz: Hint: insmod
errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid
IO or IRQ parameters.

/lib/modules/2.4.19-5mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cs46xx.o.gz failed
modprobe: insmod cs46xx failed

I have attempted to change the sound driver via the mandrake control center but I get a message saying that the cs46xx sound driver is blacklisted and snd-cs46xx will be used at next bootstrap. Then the configurator will freeze. I have also attempted to change the driver via sndconfig with no luck. It just gives me the same/lib/modules/2.4.19-5mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cs46xx.o.gz failed
modprobe: insmod cs46xx failed error. I would hate to have to go back to windows. Please help!!!
Thanks in advance.

Mandrake uses the ALSA modules by default, which are much better built, but can be kinda finicky to say the least, first what's the output of:

/sbin/lspci

as regards to the Multimedia controller, lets make certain Mandrake is getting the right module.

Cheers,

That file doesn't exist. Any other suggestions?

lspci

Which file? if "file doesn't exist" is the output of lspci try it with root privileges.

tried with root. Still nothing there.

I wonder if mandrake put lspci somewhere dumb...

/usr/sbin/lspci
/usr/local/sbin/lspci

Heck, "locate lspci" and one of those may be it.

Cheers,

The problem with the 600E is that some of the internal devices have to be told by the OS what IRQ and IO to use. You can do this in Linux with the tpctl program or if you have a windows partition you can download a dos app from ibm.com to set them. I assume since you are having this problem you don't have a windows partition at all so tpctl should fix it. Once they are set you should be able to use the mandrake tools to setup the sound. ALSA works fine for the sound.

Cool!

I will try this as soon as I get home.
Thanks again to everyone who has offered help.

I have a 600e thinkpad with Mandrake 9.1 installed. The sound worked right when I installed it. My sound did not work with 9.0 when I tried to install alsa. Maybe in 9.2 which is coming out in october you will be able to use sound. Hope that this helps
