Mandrake 9.1 Distro - Audigy and MS Trackball Optical Problems
Hi folks, a Linux noob so please be gentle....
Installed the Mandrake 9.1 distro and have two specific problems.
Been reading a thread on here (which I have yet to test) which tells you how to activate the SPDIF out on the Audigy card - only problem is you can't have analog and digital out at the same time - my speakers are digital ONLY and I also have headphones plugged into the line out port. Do I have to reconfigure the card every time I switch from Speakers to Headphones?? If the answer to that is yes then I don't think I'm ready for linux/linux isn't ready for my hardware config. It's a pain in the ass sometimes but at least in windoze all you have to do is check a box to enable or disable SPDIF output on the audigy card
Also I use an Microsoft Trackball Optical which Linux doesn't recognise at all - it seems to be completely unpowered - in normal operation in Windoze (again) theres a faint red light even when the trackball isn't being moved - it has recognised other USB devices with no problem so I dont think it's a general USB issue. MouseDrake doesn't help - as far as it's concerned the trackball simply isn't there. I' having to use a crappy old PS2 mouse at the moment but I've got two mouse devices on my desktop now which is a bit silly....
Happy to provide further diagnostic info if that will help sort the problem but please be very explicit about what I have to do to get it - only been using Linux for a week or so and not having a lot of success at the moment. It's not the user friendly OS that people make it out to be on the distro homepages!!!
Any advice welcomed. I'm trying not to contemplate reformatting the partition containing Linux but this is a LOT more difficult to learn/use than I bargained for.... I really want to be able to use Linux - I use lots of opensource sw in Windoze but I would love to be able to use an opensource o/s too...
