Mandrake 10 not able to detect my pcmcia network card

Hi there

I'm quite a newbie to Linux, started off on Mandrake 10.0 At first it detected everything and I was off and running smoothly. 2 days after my installation, it refused to detect my pcmcia xircom ethernet/modem card. I'm connected to the internet via a lan connection. I tried configuring it through harddrake but the required driver was not in the list of drivers.

After a day of pulling my hair out, I reinstalled mandrake, it now detected the card but i cannot get kde to start. It boots into console mode and on startkde complains that it cannot connect to an X server.

I have 2 questions. One how can i properly install the x server through the console mode?
If my ethernet card does give out again, how can i make mandrake detect it without having to reinstall the os again?

Thanks a lot. This ultra newbie appreciates it very much

I'm having a similar issue with my PCMCIA slots. I'm looking for a solution on that, right now.

As for the KDE GUI not starting, try using the command "startx" without the quotes and see if that does it for you. If you want the KDE to come up automatically once it does start, make sure you select SYSTEM>CONFIGURATION>CONFIGURE YOUR COMPUTER. Once the Mandrake Linux Control Center comes up, select BOOT, then AUTOLOGIN, and check the "Launch the graphical environment when your system starts."

Once you've done that, logout, then reboot.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help

startx also does not work, sorry i forgot to mention that. It says that my screen type is not correct. I'm sure it is though as i checked the file in /etc/X11/Xfreecfg (or something like that where startx complained) and the screen was correct. I even tried using different screens during the mandrake installer. But only the one i used would pass the test.

Is there a way I can change the screen setup and would be given different options without having to boot up through the installer?

What kind of video card are you using? Have you tried downloading the video driver for it from the manufacturer's web site (assuming they make one)?

I had a mysterious problem happen to me at the begging of the week where my video driver would completely crap out on me. The only way to make it work again was to re-install it. During the installation process, the driver kernel would have to be recompiled in order to work with my kernel. So I'd go through the process, and get to log into KDE until the very next time I rebooted. Once I rebooted, I'd have to go through the whole process again.

I'm not sure what was wrong, or what eventually solved the problem. It appeared to clear up on its own.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 w/ an Intel Pentium 4 running at 2.1 GHz. It's got 512 MB RAM, and an nVidia GeForce 4 with 64 MB Video memory. nVidia makes a driver for Linux that works wonderfully...except for last weekend when it did what I described above.

All of this to say that maybe your problem isn't your XFree86, but your video driver (which was apparently working well enough to let you test the system). I'd check out the vendor's web site to see if they have a video driver available.

Hope this helps.

I dunno. I got fed up and since mine was a fresh installation, i didn't have anything to lose by reinstalling mandrake. I don't really think I changed any options during the setup, but it works without problems now.

all the best.

I know the answer...

but i just can't find it

It has something to do with the module responsible for pcmcia not being loaded. Something has to be added to /etc/modules or something like that.

I don't know the details... I'm looking for the answer, I know it's here somewhere because this is where i read it... i just can't find it.

In using the search button, I have found numerous people with complaints with the Xircom card and Linux compatibility. The only thing that bothers me more, is the fact that in all of the threads where I have found newb's asking questions regarding their problem, in not one of the cases I have read thus far, has anyone received enough help to solve the problem.
