mandrake 10.1 - IPOD,USB -PLease help me

Hi to all ,
im still a newbie trying to figure it out but realy need help from you ppl.
after looking in google and here to find a solution i still cant wrok it out. here is my problem:
IPOD ----
i instaled mandrake 10.1 , when i mtrying to connect my ipod. i mennage to change the fstab in order to mount it.
its appear that my ipod is /dev/sda2 and the mount point is /mnt/ipod
when i reboot i see it under the device at konqueror and here comes the problem. if i press and choose it in the devices like all the other hd the konqueror stuck and its crashes as well as all the other hd devices. before that there wasnt any problem . i mennage to see all my hd and again after a long struggle with it. at the begining the hd were not shown under the device only at the /mnt folder... i had to reconfigure the fstab and add some lines like user previledge etc... so at the endn i so my hd under the devices so its cool ,
the only way i can see my ipod without get stuck is one i connect my ipod i go to console , log as su and then add command
mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/ipod after this i can go to /mnt/ipod and can goes from there :-). if by a mistake i open the device section and choose my
HD(sda2) {/mnt/ipod} its stuck and the koqueror seems to stop functioning. if i try and open the konqueror with the root permission it stuck as well (i add a shortcut to my konqueror and change it permission to be a root one so when i open it it ask me for the root pswwrd , so its like a su file mangager which i had in fedora, mandrake dont have this option , so i had to do it manually ..if someone have exact info regarding that and how to do that ill be happy if you can add a suggestion..i did it by my own but it seems to work)
Anyhow, i dont know what is wrong and cant find a way to work it out .
here is my fstab:
--------------------------------------------

/dev/hde2 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/hde1 /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/hde5 /home ext3 defaults 1 2
none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hda,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0
/dev/sda2 /mnt/ipod vfat umask=0,user,noauto,gid=500,uid=500,defaults 0 0
/dev/hde6 /mnt/share vfat umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto 0 0
/dev/hdb2 /mnt/win_d ntfs umask=0,user,nls=iso8859-1,noauto,ro 0 0
/dev/hdb3 /mnt/win_e ntfs umask=0,user,nls=iso8859-1,noauto,ro 0 0
/dev/hdb4 /mnt/win_f vfat umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hde3 swap swap defaults 0 0

as i said before before the ipod line all was ok, after that the konqueror stuc :-(
DISKONKEY-USB --- this is my second problem, im trying to use diskonkey when i connected it it doesnt recognise it at all. not as sda, NADA...
so i cant find a way to change my fstab in order to have it working..

btw : i had fedora core 3 and there i had no problem at all with the devices, ipod and usb was added automatically with no problem.. i moved to mandrake because im newbie to linux and heard its much easier to swim there :-)

thanks for any answer , anf if someone can tell mte whats wrong with my fstab , or any other info please let me know ...
peace

Here is the problem

The bad news is that the problem is that your iPod is HFS, not anything most linux kernels (including 2.6.8 as far as I know) can deal with.

The good news is that there are ways around it. Here are some of them:

1. Try here: http://neuron.com/~jason/ipod.html
2. Get an iPod photo (it is fat32 by default)
3. If you search sourceforge.net or freshmeat.net for iPod and Linux it should come up with some projects working on it.

Clearly you know your way around computers in general if not linux. What I would recommend is that going to Mandrake is a bad idea. I used it and learned practically nothing. So when I had to do something a little more challenging, I didn't know how to.

Try the brand new Official Sarge, over at Debian.org. It is 2 dvd's, 12 cd's or you can get a single cd and apt-get the rest via http. Make sure you print out the install guide or have another working computer from which you can read it. It is my favorite.

If you liked FC, FC-4 is out now. I haven't used FC since 2, but I hear it is getting better. Snag that and you should be alright. FC usually is much more cutting edge. Mandriva (Mandrake merged with Connectiva) spends a lot of time on their distro making it grandma friendly, and I think they do a great job. But grandma doesn't have an iPod, external hard/dvd drives, tv capture cards et cetera.

dvd's not working

Again, DVD's don't have official legal permission to run on Linux. Thanks to Jon Lech Johanson it can work. There are a lot of faq's about this if you search around the community. I don't know if Mandriva 10.1 supports DVD's for legal reasons. I know you can get packages for debian and gentoo pretty easily. Mandrake is a little tougher to install stuff on.

Try this for starters http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/DVD-HOWTO.html

A bit dated but it may fix whatever problem you are having.
