Mandrake 10.0 boot prob

I just installed Mandrake 10.0 on a computer i built for my brother. It has a GeForce 5200, AMD Athlon 64 3200+, ASUS K8V, OCX RAM (1 gig), and a 200gig SATA HDD.

For whatever reason, when i try starting Linux it dumps me to command prompt and the graphical server won't start. I tried reinstalling (several times, each different) and leaving the hardware settings alone, but it still wouldnt go to the graphical server. When i have been able to get the graphical server up, it had a weird blue background with fuscia-colored column-ish thingies evenly spaced across the screen and nothing in the background.

This is the first installation and i haven't been able to get into the graphical server, in case that bit of info is important.
