Hello everyone!
I have an external 500GB USB hard drive disk that I have been using for backing up all my data. The problem is that I made the mistake of travelling a couple of time with it and it didn't like it at all. First of all, when I power it on, it makes a strange noise, like something inside that is bouncing at a constant pace. I know that it's the read/write arm that does that because I opened the box to check inside (I even made a small scratch on the disk in the process; yeah, I just thought things were not bad enough already
).
I have a laptop with Fedora 12 running on it and whenever I plug the HDD on it, it doesn't mount anymore. I checked and no
/dev/sd* appears when I plug it. All I get is the following output from the
dmesg command:
Code:
usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 15
usb 1-2: New USB device found, idVendor=040d, idProduct=6204

At my job, I have a desktop running with Windows XP and when I plug my HDD this time, it is being detected and Windows manages to mount it but when the time comes to scan what's on it, it does it veeeeery sloooooowly, one folder at the time. It takes forever and I just don't have the patience to let it finish.
Still, the fact that Windows can still detect and mount the thing (although very poorly) gives me hope that recovering the data on it is still possible, using
dd_rescue or something of the same kind. If only I could access it with Fedora.
So what do you think? Is it possible?
Thank you for your time.
