Making linux work on a new computer
 

I buyed a new computer recently and want to make linux work on it. It doesn't really matter what distribution it is. I just want linux to work on it. Here's the specs:

Motherboard: ASUS P4C800 with built in SATA controller
Graphic Card: ATI Radeon 9500
Hard Drives: WD Raptor 36,7gb and WD Caviar 120gb

I think the problem is in the promise sata controller. I've tried Debian, Gentoo, Redhat 8 and Knoppix but none of the worked.:(

Does anyone know hot i can install linux on it?

Can you give us better idea of what doesn't work.

When you boot from a knoppix cd, what errors do you get? What happens when you boot from the other distro CDs?

yeah, the SATA controller mught the problem.

My flatmate has SATA and he installed SuSE 8.2 Pro without any problems I'm aware of.

i don't know whether you can download the Professional version, but the personal one might do the job just as well. Suse is a good OS and just as straight forward as Red Hat.

Suse 8.2 doesn't work either:(

It stops when it loads... just like gentoo.

Were you using Suse Pro?

If you were, that was the one my flatmate used (it was mine) and he didn't have any troble.

if you were using the personal maybe (just a thought) it isn't as advanced.

What you could do (and this is a great investment) is go and buy the latest edition of Linux magazine as the DVD edition has 8.2 Pro on the front cover!

If nothing works, then maybe your SATA drive itn's the issue.
