m2n-sli deluxe "ADI 1988B onboard sound"

Hey all i just finished installing sabayon linux. It seems as though i do not have sound! system starts and gives me this:

Error while initializing the sound server:
Device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such file
or directory) the sound server will continue
using the null output device.

I have a creative x-fi platinum installed on this machine, and I realize that there is not yet a driver for linux users, however I do also have a built in sound card that I want to get working "ADI 1988B 8-channel High Definition Audio CODEC" it comes on my m2n-sli deluxe mobo.

I ran alsaconf from root and a quick blip of an err message popped up "could not load module snd" then alsaconf loaded. I proceeded and it built the card database. Hmmm "no supported pnp or pci card found would you like to probe legacy isa sound cards/chips?" I chose yes then it gave me a list of drivers to probe:

opl3sa2 yamaha opl3sa2+
esl8xx Ess esl8xx audio drive
esl688 Ess esl688 audio drive
sb16 sound blaster 16
sb8 sound blaster 1.0/2.0/pro

i just hit ok to probe them all

shall i try all possible dma and irq combinations?

i chose yes

"configuring snd-oplsa2" do you wan't to modify /etc/modules.d/alsa?

i chose yes

"ok sound driver is configured"

i hit ok and this was the output

I have the same motherboard, m2n-sli deluxe by ASUS, and i'm using Gentoo2006.1. To enable my sound (Which didn't work out of the box), i reconfigured my kernel.

I enabled ALSA, and @ PCI devices i enabled INTEL HD AUDIO.

After i restarted my computer, and modprobed snd-hda-intel, the sound worked.

You could try:

modprobe snd-hda-intel

If it doesn't exist, you should reconfigure your kernel:

open terminal:

type: su
(enter password)

cd /usr/src/linux

make menuconfig

(under Device Drivers > Sound > ALSA > PCI Devices >

(M) INTEL HD AUDIO

Activate as module.

alright i tryed modprobe snd-hda-intel and it diddnt return anything , just went to a new prompt line.

so i opened up the kernel config and checked only to find out that HD intel audio is already listed as a module. So then i re-compiles the kernel just for the hell of it and .. well.. yeah still no luck. Any more suggestions man?

If it doesn't return anything, it's a good thing. Did you check after the modprobe wether sound worked?

Anyway, how do u use ALSA ? Do you use it from the kernel? or did you install the package: media-sound/alsa-driver ?

If your using both, you should REMOVE the media-sound/alsa-driver that you emerged. Both at the same time will cause problems.

Well, considering the fact that INTEL HD AUDIO was allready installed as a module inside the kernel. ALSA has been installed as a kernel driver.

I suggest removing alsa as a package. Then reboot, and modprobe snd-hda-intel

Then your sound should work.

There is a full information page on this for Gentoo: HERE
