Lucent WinModem to work on Debian 2.6.9 kernel

I am very new to Linux and have been messing around with it enough that i can use it decently. I have found several write up on setting up the drivers and what not makeing it possible to use my WinModem with GNU. Just when i think i have done everything correct, i still cant seem to get a connection. Ive tried download and extracted the drivers, "make" new drivers, copied the *.ko files into the /lib/modules/2.6.9/dirvers/ folder. Running 'depmod' forcing the kernel to read through modules. "modprobe ltserial" (one of the *.ko files) and everything seems to run fine. I gkdial (after pppconfig) and i still connect. I am really trying my damnedest to get this POS WinModem to work, can somebody more knowlegable help me out here?
